Substance Abuse:

Alcohol and drugs are often the first line of defense against uncomfortable or stressful situations. We have all heard, "Have a drink, it will calm your nerves." Unfortunately, for some this one or even two drinks may become three or more. These behaviors can be addressed in therapy before they become unmanageable. There is a simple test on the Test Yourself page to "self-measure" your drinking.

Occasionally individuals develop issues other than substance abuse. This is where we begin to look at compulsive disorders other than alcohol or drugs. These consists of various compulsions involving food, gambling, sex and other issues. In my practice I work primarily with addictions as well as body image and self esteem concerns I have also had success with sexual addictions with individuals who have dealt with their co-morbid drug addiction.

I have affiliations with several rehabilitation centers and work within different modalities. It is also my belief that once a rehabilitation center stay is completed the individual has the tools and ability to care for him or herself appropriately with the help of supportive psychotherapy. Substance abuse and compulsive disorders impact more than the individual, they affect the family, partner and employer as well. Through a better understanding of the basic causes of the compulsions and the development of new tools to better cope with stressful situations one can more readily face their day to day challenges.

I was certified as a Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor with the State of New York in 1998 and have taught Relapse Prevention at the Alcohol Council of New York, and have supervised other CASAC's, Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists who have re-certified with the State of New York. My treatment methods have focused on helping clients and practitioners develop an appreciation for the role client self image plays in the recovery process and the success of treatment outcomes.

Relapse is not a necessary part of the recovery process.

Regardless of your condition, you're not alone and can organize your recovery style or program around your schedule and vision. For some this would be more along the lines of the 12 Step model where for others it will be something completely individualized.
